Similiar Covers
I will be using one person for the front cover as i feel this is a way f attracting mroe readers if the page isn't too packed full of images.
Monday, 7 December 2009
This is a scan of my plan of my contents page. The title of the contents page will be at the top on the centre of the page. It will also include the image of the new artist to the right of the page which will take up a quarter of the page and then the page nubers to the left with the features at the bottom of the page as this is a least important factor of the page. Friday, 4 December 2009
This is my main cover plan for my music magazine. I decided to have the masthead to the upper left as it wont cover up too much of the main image. I have also made the price also at the upper rght so it wont cover up the main image as the image will be the biggest selling point of the magazine. The sub headings will include selling lines and advertisements for the inside of the magazine. For example there will be quotes from interviews that it will inlcude and it will also include points of the music artists that i have on the front page.

This page spread is different in layout, content and images than the previous example. The main image takes up 3/4 of the page. They are not smiling in the picture and this makes them look confident but their positions make them looked relaxed and calm. The writing on the page consists of different colours and in different fonts. The main word you see is 'Brother' which relates to the band as they are called The Jonas Brothers. This is in bold writing and at the bottom of the image so it doesn't cover up the image. It is also outlined in bright pink with the letters in white. This makes it stands out more tothe readers and it also relates to the audience as it is mostly young girls who are big fans of the band. There are also quotes in pink writing from the bands interview which happens on the opposite page. Again this attracts the readers.
There are also smaller images on the opposite page of them performing which their fans would like to look at as they enjoy seeing them perform. This also shows the work that they do and how serioud they are about doing it.

Here is an example of a double page spread in a music magazine.
The page consists of a main image taking up a whole page and then an article on the band telling the readers their background as a band and the music they play.
The main image is a long shot so their whole body is in the image and they are standing in very dominant and confident positions which could reflect on their music.
This band will attract middle aged readers as the band themselves. The writing is in Grey, Red and White which i think is to connotate mixture and this will reflect in their attitudes and their music. However i think that this makes it look forgetful and boring. Nothing stands out on the page except the main image. They are also wearing clothes which are browns, blacks and greys which show the style of the group. They are based outside so the lighting is mainly natural but it is also harsh lighting so it mainly focuses on the group.

This contents page is very bright and it makes the reader look at every detail on the page as it is very brightly coloured and has big font. The main image is slightly slanted and it makes it look as though it has been stamped onto the page.
The pages are listed to both sides of the image and makes it look framed. The 'Studio News' section is covered in green spots and this can connotate spotlights to make it seem like showbiz news. This will attracts readers as they may want to knwo the latest gossip.
Contents Page
Here is a contents page of the magazine 'Q'. Thursday, 19 November 2009

This magazine has many different conventions to the previous magazines that i have analysed.
The Language used on the front cover immediatley identifys the magazine as being in the rock theme for that week. The sub heading advertising that Green Day are interviewed is at the bottom in very large writing which stands out to the udience who scan over the front cover before buying. Iut also advertises bands such as Radiohead and Nirvana and also artists such as Pete Doherty and Bruce Springsteen. All of these artists and ands connect to the rock theme of the magazine.
The institution for any magazine is the company and what they want the outcome fo the magazine to be like. The institution of Q is a very well known company and this is why the Masthead is slightly covered by the main image. It is covered becase it is a very popular magazine and people know what magazine it is when they see the red and white corner. This is a commercial company so they are trying t ake as much money as possible which is why the magazine is expensive. The cover prioce for thios magazine is £3.90 which is a typical price for a magazine which makes as much money as possible. You can also see the type of institution by the amount of adverts it includes for products like DVD's Music CD's and sometimes cars. Q also has it's own radio station which is another way it advertises itself to become more popular. The website for Q also shows that they are involved in festivals, sells merchandise such as t-shirts and also newsletters that you are bale to sign up for.
Q magazine has an ideology of where the type of music you listen to is important. They have shon this by having a ver popular american rock band on the cover and also advertising other popular bands with the same genre of music. 'The first and Last days of Nirvana' These appeal to the people who like rock music and enjoy listening to old bands.
The audience are the consumers of the media or the readers of this magazine. This magazine appeals to people around the ages of 19-25 as different issues of Q have different artists with them all of them appealing to the same age range. This particular cover appeals mostly to men with the genre of music it is advertising.

Magazine Analysis
This magazine has a different layout compared to my previous example. NME magazine has an ideology where rock and electronic music is important. An example of the media language that shows this is the headlines of the Arctic monkeys and the main image of La Roux who produces electronic music.
The presentation of this magazine attracts the audience who are attracted to these genres of music. The main image is a close up of La Roux and she is giving eye contact to the camera. This gives more emotion to the reader and it makes her look confident and relaxed. There is harsh lighting on her face which makes her stand out against the dark background of the picture again this makes her look confident.
The audience of this magazine will be older teens to young adults who are popular with this type of music and who are fans of La Roux and other rock bands. I think this magazine is mainly aimed at males as it is a bold cover but also there are no headlines for fashion or gossip of other singers. The price of this magazine is around £2.30 which is an average cost of a popular magazine at the moment. This
would attract working class people.
Institutions are the companies and organisations that create media texts. The institution for this magazine will be NME as it is a very big company and the magazine is very popular to the public. This magazine has it's own website where you are able to join for subscription for the magazine and they also advertise that they have their own T.V channel and have NME in America. These are all different ways in which they are trying to make money for the company.
The language for this magazine tries to connect to the audience and the music that it involves. The masthead is in red which is a bold colour and it is also outlined with black to make it seem more bold to the reader. The sub headings are quotes and advertisements for winnings and quotes from interviews given by the singers which readers will be interested in reading.
Front Cover Analysis
This is the magazine 'Rolling Stone'. The main image is of the band Kings of Leon who are a massive rock band in America. The image is a long shot of the band looking straight into the camera. They are wearing black, navy and white coloured which are intimidating coloures.
The language used on the front cover is attractive to the reader and is a way of targeting the audience. All of the subheadings are connected to the type of magazine and sort of stories that it involves. The sell line is a way of attracting their target audience. The splash is in a layout which enables all of the main texts to be seen by the reader. The masthead is also the name of a famous rock band so this also helps give off the genre of the magazine.
The ideology is an important aspect of the magazine as consumers will want to see a band which represents all of the aspects of the megazine on one page. Mainstream magazines know that music is important to their mainstream audience which is another reason why they choose to have big music artists on the front cover.
The audience for this type of magazine is mainly rock and punk fans. The way in which they advertise stories on the front page of other rock artists gives the consumer a a way of identifying the genre of the magazine without having to read the magazine. The main image of Kings of Leon represent the style of music that 'Rolling Stone' is attracting and the genre of music.
The representation is very important to the front cover of a magazine as it presents the, stories and the main headlines in a way that attract their audience. " The god-fearing, booze swelling......" this is a way of presenting a band makes them seem fearless and their music fearless and this attracts audiences as they want to read about new artists and how their music is. The main image is set in the desert with the band dressed as cowboys and this makes them look intimidating and they have self belief. It also makes them look confident in themselves and this shows in their music.

Evaluation
My front cover of a college magazine turned out to be a lot harder than I thought it would be. I started by setting up a blog, which I found easy to use and very helpful for the project.
I then started looking for current or past magazine covers which I could analyse and get ideas from for my own. I looked at American and English magazines, which I found very different to each other in layout and headlines. I decided to use quoted from students for my own magazine such as advertising the help at college and the support you are able to get but mostly the environment you are learning in. I did this to attract to the target audience which was 16-18yr olds. I also wanted to use logos used by the college as I felt these would be helpful to make sure it looked professional.
I made some changes when I was making the front cover. One of these was the setting for the picture and how I took it. I was originally going to use the Wilson Building as a background but I chose the Ash building instead as it wasn’t as bold and it gave a nicer background to the picture. I also chose to have 2 people in the picture as I thought this gave the reader and the target audience a feeling of being relaxed and content when they are at college.
In my blogger I included a mood board, the drafts I had made, contents draft and magazine analysis. All of these things show the work I had done to prepare for my final front cover. I was able to scan in my hand drawn draft which I put onto my blog and this enable me to show my original idea.
I used LIIAR to analyse my other magazine covers and also to think of a good idea for my own magazine following the steps of LIIAR.
I am very happy with my end result and I have enjoyed working on it and using the blogs to store my work and also add new ideas I have come up with on the way. I hope when people look at this cover they will get the idea I am trying to put across to the audience.

My Final Front Cover

What the picture will involve
Models
Props
Costumes
A Location
All of these have been chosen to represent the cover and to attract the right target audience for the magazine. I will be using 2 models for the medium close up shot. The models will be holding books, folders, and their bags so they look like average students. They will be asked to wear very causal clothes so it gives off the casual feel of the college and how they represent the college atmosphere. The picture will be taken outside and infront of the Wilson building on the college site to show the modern campus. Her are a few pictures i took of the building which will be in the background:

College Analysis 2

This is a very different style to the previous cover.
1) The layout is similiar with the masthead being at the top and in bright colours and fonts. It is in red to connotate passion to give the idea that the college is passionate about the students.
2) They have used Nastia Liukin who is an american gymnast who is a role model for young people. They have used her to show that young people can have a bright future if they go to SMU College. She is also wearing a t-shirt saying 'i love SMU' to influence people to go their because she looks like she loves it there.
3) It also involves headings which can relate to young teens who are thinking of going to college. Such as "She's 15 and pregnant" if young girls see this heading they wont feel alone in their situation.
4) The background of the picture is blurred out so that the viewers eyes are drawn straight to Nastia Liukin and the clthes she is wearing.
Magazine Analysis
This cover has many different points to make:
1) The masthead is at the very top so when it is stacked you can read the heading and laso in a bold colour.
2) The masthead is in a very relaxed font to mimic handwriting of a student or a teen.
3) The heading for the magazine is in the centre to give a bigger impact on the topic and what the magazine offers.
4) There are sub-heading to the side so they don't get in the way but also may attract a certain audience/reader.
5) The image of the girl lying down whilst listenign to music gives the connotation that it is a very relaxed feel around the college and that she is in a relaxed environment.
6) The model is giving full eye contact to give the full impact to the audience.
7) The background is very pale so that your attention is immediatley on the girl and the titiles.

Helllooooooo
I am starting to plan my Media Portfolio.
Brief
Preliminary Exercise: using DTP and an image manipulation programme, produce the front page of a new school/college magazine, featuring a photograph of a student in medium close-up some appropiatley laid-out text and a masthead. Additionally you must produce a mock-up of the layout of the contents page to demonstrate their grasp of DTP.
Main Task
The front page, contents and double page spread of a new music magazine. All images and text used must be original, produced by you - minimum of four images.
The five key concepts which i must take on board are:
- Language - Specfic terms used in Media.
- Institution - An organisation which produces in media text.
- Ideology - The Values and system of beliefs we all share as a society. Capitalism and Democracy
- Audience - Consumers of media. The institution targets a specific audience.
- Representation - Re-presentation - The media re-present society back to the audience and it's values. The values are the ideology.
I have already made some decisions about the magazine. I have decided about the gender which will be neutral so that it can be advertised and showed to all students who read it. The age for the audience will be 16-18 yr olds which i think will be a suitable age goup.
